| Obverse description | The field is divided into four quadrants by a cross, evoking the Portuguese Cross of the Order of Christ. In the upper-left quadrant, an armillary sphere symbolising Portuguese maritime exploration; in the upper-right, a caravel under full sail rendered in high relief; in the lower-left, a larger galleon sailing to the right; and in the lower-right, the crowned Portuguese shield. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA' runs along the upper rim, with the denomination '1000 ESCUDOS' inscribed along the lower arc. The mint mark 'INCM' appears at the left and the engraver's signature 'JOAQUIM CORREIA' at the lower right of the field. |
