| Reverse description | Left-center field features a bold right-facing portrait bust of King Dom João II of Portugal, depicted wearing a cap and draped costume in a late-medieval style, rendered with fine sculptural relief against a mirror-polished proof field. Behind him, a period caravel under full sail rides stylized ocean waves, evoking Portugal's Age of Discovery. The engraver's signature NOGUEIRA DA SILVA and the mint mark INCM appear in small incuse letters at the lower left. The circular legend D. JOÃO II : REI DE PORTUGAL arcs across the upper periphery in Gothic-style lettering, while the commemorative dates 1495 · 1995 are inscribed along the lower arc, marking the 500th anniversary of the king's death. |
