Additional information

The frigate D. Fernando II e Glória was built in Damão, Portuguese India, in 1843 and served as a training vessel for the Portuguese Navy well into the twentieth century. By the time this coin was issued, the ship had been sitting in near-total dereliction at Cacilhas for decades — a slow-motion disaster that prompted a major restoration effort beginning in the late 1980s. The timing of this commemorative tracks directly with that project gaining public visibility.

The proof distinction here corresponds to the INCM's standard polished die treatment, referenced as the second variant under Gomes R 158.02.
