Bradbury Wilkinson produced this high-denomination note at a moment when Portugal was grinding through severe post-war fiscal strain — the escudo had replaced the réis only in 1911, and by 1920 inflation was already eroding confidence in paper currency across much of Europe. A 1000 escudo note at that date represented serious money, and the Chapa A designation indicates this is the first plate variant of the series, a distinction that matters for completeness collectors given how few examples survived heavy use.
Bradbury Wilkinson's watermark security was considered robust for the period, though Portuguese notes of this era are frequently encountered with foxing and brittleness from poor storage conditions in the country's humid coastal climate.
