| 裏面の説明 | Predominantly green over a multicolor underprint. An oval portrait vignette of Queen Philippa of Lancaster appears at left, complemented by a sculptural scene drawn from the Padrão dos Descobrimentos monument in which she is shown kneeling alongside her son the Infante Santo (Ferdinand the Holy Prince) and the explorer Fernão Mendes Pinto (c. 1509–1583). The overall composition reflects the historical iconography of the Age of Discovery. |

Bradbury Wilkinson produced this high-denomination note at their New Malden works, a firm whose intaglio work for colonial and metropolitan Portuguese issues spanned decades. By 1956, Portugal's 1000 Escudos occupied a significant position in daily commerce — roughly equivalent to a skilled worker's weekly wage — which kept handling rates high and genuinely fine survivors uncommon.
The P#161 series ran through multiple printings with incremental security and plate revisions, making print-run identification a collector discipline in itself. The eighth printing carries subtle typographic and tint differences from earlier states that are only reliably distinguished under comparison.
