A large intaglio vignette of a dragon tree (Dracaena draco), native to the island of São Nicolau, occupies the central and lower portion of the note, with a stylised optical security device and repeated numeral '1000' in colour-shifting ink forming a vertical band along the right margin. The denomination '1000' appears in olive-coloured numerals at upper left, with 'MIL ESCUDOS' in large intaglio lettering across the bottom.
