Masie Nguema Biyogo — born Francisco Macías Nguema — renamed both himself and Bioko Island after severing ties with Spain and embarking on one of post-independence Africa's most violent dictatorships. This trial piece dates to the height of his regime, a period during which roughly a third of Equatorial Guinea's population had either fled or been killed. The Banco Central existed largely on paper; the economy had collapsed so thoroughly that coinage of any denomination was essentially theoretical.
Essai and trial strikes from this issuer are almost certainly Paris Mint products, commissioned through the standard francophone African monetary arrangements of the period. Nguema was deposed and executed by firing squad the following year.
