The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic — internationally unrecognized but self-governing since the 1994 ceasefire that ended the First Karabakh War — issued collector coinage partly as a tool of soft statecraft, asserting the trappings of sovereignty that formal diplomatic recognition denied. This piece honors Hayk Nahapet, the legendary patriarch-archer of Armenian mythology credited with founding the Armenian nation, whose story appears in the 5th-century histories of Moses of Khoren.
