Obverse description Central field features the gilt coat of arms of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, depicting a spread eagle with a shield on its breast, surmounted by a crown, all within a circular legend band. The date 2004 appears at the top of the field flanked by decorative olive and laurel branches, with the fineness mark .999 visible to the right. The denomination 1000 is inscribed below the arms, and an Armenian-script legend reading ՀԱՅԱՍՏԱՆՅԱՆ ԴՐԱՄ (Armenian Dram) curves along the lower border on a raised ribbon. The circular legend within the arms reads ԼԵՌՆԱՅԻՆ ՂԱՐԱԲԱՂԻ ՀԱՆՐԱՊԵՏՈՒԹՅՈՒՆ ԱՐՑԱԽ in Armenian script.

Additional information

Artsakh — the self-declared republic controlling the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh enclave — issued commemorative coinage in the early 2000s partly as an assertion of statehood, recognized by no UN member nation. These pieces were struck under contract by foreign mints and never circulated domestically in any meaningful sense; Artsakh's day-to-day economy ran on Armenian drams.

The KM#21a designation indicates a variant within the type — likely a finish or metal specification change from a base issue.
