The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic — a de facto Armenian-administered state internationally recognized by virtually no sovereign government — issued its own coinage beginning in the early 2000s largely as an assertion of political identity rather than for any practical monetary function. Armenian drams circulated in daily commerce; these pieces did not. The 1000 Drams denomination exists at a face value that bore no meaningful relationship to how these coins were actually distributed or priced.
KM#20a designates the silver variant, distinguished from a base-metal issue of the same type.
