The Vorotan carpet tradition originates from the Vorotan River valley in the Syunik region of southern Armenia, an area that remained relatively isolated through much of the Soviet period — a circumstance that helped preserve weaving techniques and pattern vocabularies that were systematically suppressed or standardized elsewhere. Armenian carpet weaving as a documented craft dates to at least the fifth century, with medieval Armenian sources distinguishing regional styles by their knotting density and dye sources.
The Central Bank of Armenia has issued a recurring numismatic series dedicated to Armenian carpet types since 2011. This 2018 piece continues that program, each entry dedicated to a geographically distinct tradition.
