Reverse description The reverse presents a large, boldly modelled portrait bust of Tigran the Great, King of Armenia, facing right in the ancient Hellenistic tradition. The king wears his distinctive tall tiara, elaborately decorated with floral rosettes, stepped battlements adorned with spherical finials, and pendant cheek-pieces decorated with dotted borders, all rendered in high sculptural relief. The portrait is closely cropped and dominates the entire field of the coin, reflecting the iconography found on ancient tetradrachms struck in Tigran's name. The engraver's mark appears in the lower left field. The antique finish accentuates the depth of the relief and enhances the archaic, medallic quality of the design.
