Saint Gregory the Illuminator, credited with converting Armenia to Christianity in 301 AD — making it the first nation to adopt the faith as a state religion — was imprisoned for thirteen years in a pit at Khor Virap before King Tiridates III freed and was himself baptized by him. The relic commemorated here, Gregory's right hand, is preserved at Etchmiadzin and has been used to consecrate every Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church since the medieval period.
The gold-plated silver format places this squarely within Armenia's long-running collector series honoring ecclesiastical relics and national saints — a program that expanded notably after 2010.
