The History Museum of Armenia, housed in a building originally completed in 1950 on Yerevan's Republic Square, holds one of the largest collections of prehistoric artifacts from the South Caucasus — including materials excavated from the Areni-1 cave complex, where a 5,500-year-old leather shoe and the world's oldest known winery were recovered. The Central Bank has issued a broader series of coins honoring Armenian cultural institutions, of which this is one entry. The museum itself predates its current building by decades, founded in 1919 during the brief first Republic of Armenia.
