Hamazasp Babadzhanian was a Soviet Armenian marshal who commanded tank forces during some of the most brutal armored engagements on the Eastern Front, including operations around Lvov in 1944. He later served as Chief of Armored Forces of the Soviet Army through the 1970s. Armenia's commemorative coin program has consistently used silver issues to claim figures from the Soviet military pantheon as part of a distinctly Armenian national story — a retrospective act of cultural reclamation that began almost immediately after independence in 1991.
