Haghpat Monastery, founded in the 10th century under the Bagratid kingdom, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996 — just two years before this coin was issued, almost certainly as a direct response to that designation. Armenia was then barely seven years into independence and actively building a national numismatic program around its pre-Soviet cultural heritage.
The monastery survived Mongol raids and multiple earthquakes across nine centuries. It still functions as a religious site in Lori Province.
