Gndevank Monastery was founded in the 10th century on a steep cliff above the Arpa River gorge in the Vayots Dzor region — a location so defensively impractical for a religious community that its construction almost certainly required direct princely patronage, likely from the Syunik dynasty. The site fell into disuse and partial ruin well before the Soviet period, which spared it the deliberate anti-religious demolitions of the 1930s but left it structurally precarious.
This coin belongs to Armenia's ongoing series celebrating medieval ecclesiastical architecture, a program that has drawn sustained interest from thematic collectors since the early 2000s. The Arpa River below the monastery feeds into Lake Sevan.
