| Obverse description | Central field depicts an aerial perspective view of the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) in Athens, rendered in fine detail with its characteristic horseshoe-shaped track and tiered marble seating, set against a mountainous landscape. Above the stadium, a laurel wreath enclosing the date 1896 appears at the upper centre of the field. The circular legend ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ arcs around the upper periphery, with the date 1996 at the right, all in Greek script. The denomination ΔΡΑΧΜΕΣ 1000 is inscribed in the lower field in bold relief. A fleur-de-lis mint mark appears at the bottom rim. |
