Additional information

The Italian invasion of October 1940 — launched from Albania after Mussolini's ultimatum was rejected by Metaxas in a single word — ended in catastrophic failure for Rome. Greek forces pushed the Italians back deep into Albanian territory, the first successful Allied counter-offensive of the war. Germany was forced to delay Operation Barbarossa to bail out the Italian campaign, a diversion some historians argue meaningfully affected the timeline of the Eastern Front.

This commemorative was issued fifty years after those events. KM#155 is one of several silver issues the Bank of Greece produced across the late 1980s and early 1990s marking World War II anniversaries.
