Greece entered the First World War on the Allied side in June 1917 following the forced abdication of King Constantine I, and this high-denomination note belongs to the immediate fiscal aftermath of that political rupture. The National Bank of Greece turned to the American Bank Note Company — already familiar with Greek commissions — as European printing capacity was badly disrupted by the war.
The 1000 Drachmai was not a note for ordinary transactions. At that value, it moved through commercial and governmental channels rather than retail ones, which means genuine circulation wear is uncommon but not unknown.
