Hong Kong's lunar gold series began in 1975 with the Year of the Rabbit, making this 1983 Pig issue the third cycle into the program. The colony's government produced these specifically to compete with private refiners and overseas mints flooding the Asian market with lunar gold products during the late 1970s and early 1980s — official backing gave them a premium that privately issued pieces could not command.
Mintages were strictly controlled and never large. The 1983 issue appeared just two years before the Sino-British Joint Declaration formalized the 1997 handover, a period when demand for portable, high-value assets among Hong Kong's population was quietly but measurably rising.
