Obverse description Intaglio portrait vignette of Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, in full military dress uniform with decorations, positioned at left. The central field carries a large guilloche medallion with the numeral 1000, flanked by ornate scroll work, with the bold script legend 'Dominion of Canada' arching across the upper portion. The date 'Ottawa, 2nd Jany. 1901' and countersignature and signature lines appear at the lower right, with the printer's imprint of American Bank Note Co., Ottawa at the bottom centre.

Reverse description Printed entirely in green, the reverse is dominated by three large guilloche rosettes each incorporating the numeral 1000, arranged horizontally across the centre of the note. An elaborate architectural vignette of a classical building runs across the upper portion, framed by dense lathe-work borders and foliate scroll ornaments at each corner. The legends 'DOMINION OF CANADA' and 'One Thousand Dollars' appear in the central and lower fields respectively.
