| Obverse description | Intaglio portrait vignette of Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, in full military dress uniform with decorations, positioned at left. The central field carries a large guilloche medallion with the numeral 1000, flanked by ornate scroll work, with the bold script legend 'Dominion of Canada' arching across the upper portion.
