The Bahamas issued this piece to commemorate the 1983 America's Cup, the year Australia II famously broke the New York Yacht Club's 132-year winning streak — the longest in the history of international sport. The race generated enormous commercial interest across Caribbean and Commonwealth nations, and several mints scrambled to produce commemorative issues ahead of the September Newport finals.
Fr#34 places this squarely in the Friedberg gold type series for Bahamian issues, where it remains one of the heavier struck commemoratives from the archipelago's post-independence coinage program.
