| 正面描述 | The national coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe occupies the central field, depicting a shield charged with a palm tree, flanked by two African grey parrots with wings displayed, serving as supporters. A five-pointed star surmounts the shield, with two ribbons bearing the national motto inscribed thereon. The circular legend reads REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE along the upper periphery, with the date 1990 appearing in large numerals at the base of the design. |

São Tomé and Príncipe issued a wave of silver commemoratives in the late 1980s and early 1990s almost entirely for the collector export market — hard currency the islands badly needed as their single-party socialist economy unraveled. The 1990 soccer issue appeared as the country was mid-transition: the ruling MLSTP had just agreed to multiparty elections under pressure, formally abandoning Marxism-Leninism that same year. These coins were never intended for domestic circulation and almost certainly never saw the islands at all, struck under contract and sold directly into European numismatic channels.
