Obverse description Central to the obverse is a pentagonal cartouche bearing the national coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe, depicting a crowned double-headed eagle with spread wings, surrounded by an elaborate interlaced orbital design whose curved bands are inscribed with the names of the world's continents: AFRICA, ÁSIA, EUROPA, AMÉRICA, and OCEANIA. The denomination 1000 DOBRAS appears below the central cartouche, within the pentagon. The peripheral legend REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE curves along the upper rim, while the date 1998, flanked by two stars, is positioned at the base of the coin in the lower field.
