Issued the same year Diana died in Paris, this piece was part of a wave of memorial coinage that swept through minor issuing authorities in late 1997 and into 1998. São Tomé e Príncipe, a small island nation in the Gulf of Guinea with no connection to the British royal family, produced several Diana-themed pieces through the same third-party licensing arrangements that funneled commemorative programs to dozens of similarly situated states. The coins were never intended for circulation and exist purely as collector product.
