São Tomé e Príncipe issued a sprawling series of sports-themed commemoratives ahead of the 1996 Atlanta Games, well before most collectors had much reason to pay attention to this small island nation's coinage. The three-year gap between striking and the Games themselves was purely commercial — these were produced for the international collector market, not domestic circulation, and almost none ever saw the archipelago's shores.
