| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe is depicted centrally in the field, featuring a shield supported by two African grey parrots with outstretched wings, surmounted by a black star above the shield. The shield bears a palmate motif, and below it a scroll carries the national motto. The circular legend around the upper periphery reads 'REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE', with the denomination '1000 DOBRAS' inscribed across the upper field above the arms. |

São Tomé e Príncipe issued a sprawling series of Olympic commemoratives years ahead of the Atlanta Games — this piece dates to 1993, three years before the torch was lit. The islands had no field hockey tradition whatsoever, making the subject purely commercial: these coins were produced for the international collector market, not domestic circulation, and were never intended to pass through local hands.
