| Obverse description | Central device depicting the coat of arms of Umm al-Quwain, comprising two crossed flags flanked by laurel branches encircling the shield. The Hijri date ١٣٨٩ and the Gregorian date 1970 appear below the arms, accompanied by the denomination expressed as ١٠٠٠ درهم = ١٠ ريالات and 10 U.A.Q. RIYALS. Umm Al Qaiwain issued this piece in 1970 — one year before the Trucial States dissolved into the United Arab Emirates — as part of a wave of commemorative coinage produced by the smaller sheikhdoms during that transitional period. Several of these emirates contracted European mints to strike collectible issues largely aimed at foreign buyers rather than local circulation, generating hard currency ahead of federation.
The Abu Simbel series tied these Gulf issues to the UNESCO-led salvage operation that relocated the Nubian temples between 1964 and 1968, a campaign that attracted international goodwill coinage from unlikely quarters.
