| 正面描述 | The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia state emblem occupies the central field, depicting a torch with a flame surrounded by six sheaves of wheat bound by a ribbon, with the founding date 29·XI·1943 inscribed on the ribbon. A five-pointed star surmounts the emblem. The bilingual legend encircles the design, reading in Cyrillic to the left and Latin script to the right. The denomination Д 1000 D is struck in large characters along the lower portion of the field. |

Yugoslavia hosted the 29th Chess Olympiad in Novi Sad in November 1990 — a deeply awkward moment, as the country was already fracturing along the fault lines that would produce full-scale war within a year. The organizing committee pressed ahead regardless, and the commemorative coin program went with it.
At 3.5 grams of .900 gold, this is a small piece by commemorative standards, consistent with the Yugoslav mint's approach to affordable gold issues throughout the 1980s.
