Bosnia and Herzegovina's first independent currency issues were produced under extreme duress. This 1000 Dinara was part of the inaugural series printed as the republic moved toward monetary separation from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992, the same year the siege of Sarajevo began. The notes were printed domestically on whatever stock was available, which accounts for the notoriously variable paper quality — some examples approach cardboard in feel, others are thinner and more prone to edge splitting.
The P#50 series circulated into hyperinflationary conditions almost immediately, rendering the 1000 Dinara denomination effectively worthless within months of issue.
