Obverse description This note is an overprinted Austro-Hungarian 1000 Kronen issue (original dated 2 January 1902), with the handstamp or overprint applied to the Hungarian face of the note per decree, as Fiume was part of the Hungarian crown lands. The Hungarian side carries a central vignette of the double-headed imperial eagle flanked by multilingual denomination inscriptions, with a right-side oval portrait vignette of a young woman in Art Nouveau style set within guilloche borders. The 'CITTÁ DE FIUME' handstamp or overprint validates the note for circulation in the Free State of Fiume.

Fiume's brief existence as an independent free state — declared under d'Annunzio's occupation in 1919 and grudgingly formalized by the Treaty of Rapallo in November 1920 — produced a remarkably thin monetary infrastructure. This 1000 Corone note was issued under that unstable arrangement, with the territory still using Austro-Hungarian crown denominations even as the political ground shifted beneath it.

Italian annexation came in 1924, rendering these notes worthless almost immediately. The high denomination suggests inflationary pressure was already biting before the state itself ceased to exist.
