Rubén Darío died in León on February 6, 1916, of pneumonia complicated by cirrhosis — impoverished despite international fame, his final months marked by a disastrous fundraising tour through the United States that left him physically broken. This coin marks the centenary of that death. Nicaragua has long treated Darío as its foremost cultural export, his face appearing on earlier circulating coinage well before this commemorative was struck.
The KM#115 issue is part of a broader Central American silver commemorative program popular with thematic collectors rather than circulators. Produced at 31.1g in .925 silver, it was never intended to move through commerce.
