Rama IX — Bhumibol Adulyadej — died on 13 October 2016 after a 70-year reign, the longest of any monarch in Thai history. This 1000 Baht note was issued the following year as part of a commemorative series released during the official mourning period, when the country's banknote aesthetic shifted to muted, subdued tones as a deliberate departure from the preceding circulation issues.
The Bank of Thailand Note Printing Works has produced domestic currency in-house since 1969, making Thailand one of relatively few countries in Southeast Asia with full sovereign printing capacity. P#134 is the posthumous issue — distinct from the earlier Rama IX 1000 Baht circulation series — and was intended for both use and retention.
