Rwanda's National Bank issued this piece as part of a broader wave of large-format commemorative silver struck by African nations in the late 2000s — almost none of which were intended for domestic circulation. The coins were produced for the European collector market, typically contracted through minting houses in Germany or Austria, with Rwanda lending its issuing authority in exchange for a licensing arrangement. The Taurus designation places it within a zodiac-themed series.
KM#66 is well-documented but the series attracted considerable criticism from collector societies for blurring the line between numismatic issues and novelty medallions.
