Pick 61 belongs to the series Da Afghanistan Bank introduced after the fall of the Taliban government, when the new administration — backed by international donors — undertook a full currency reform in 2002 to replace the catastrophically inflated Afghani that had fractured into multiple competing issues during the civil war years. The 1000-Afghani denomination was the highest in the initial reformed series, printed by De La Rue.

The reform exchanged old Afghanis at 1000:1, meaning this note's face value was effectively one pre-reform Afghani — a ratio that illustrates just how completely the previous monetary system had collapsed.
