Władysław I Łokietek — "the Elbow-high," so called for his reportedly short stature — reunified a fragmented Polish kingdom after decades of Piast dynastic infighting and was crowned at Kraków in 1320, the first Polish coronation held there. This trial strike was produced as part of Poland's extensive proof and pattern program of the 1980s, when the National Bank regularly issued test pieces evaluating nickel alloy performance before committing to circulation runs. Most never progressed further.
