In 2019, Poland repatriated 100 tonnes of gold from the Bank of England — roughly half the country's total reserves — completing the transfer in two shipments. The decision was driven by NBP Governor Adam Glapiński, who framed the move in explicitly national terms, citing the need for strategic assets to be held on Polish soil. The coin commemorates that specific operation, not gold ownership in the abstract.
