Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse features the conjoined busts in left-facing profile of Mieszko I and his wife Dąbrówka, the founding royal couple of the Polish state, commemorating the millennium of Polish Christianity. Both figures wear diademed headbands and ornately decorated period attire, sculpted with fine artistic detail by engraver Wacław Kowalik. The word PRÓBA (trial/pattern) appears incuse in the lower left field. The circular legend surrounding the design reads MIESZKO I - DĄBRÓWKA above and ZŁOTYCH 100 ZŁOTYCH below, with the denomination and trial designation completing the inscription.

Aanvullende informatie

Poland's Millennium coinage commemorated 1,000 years of Polish statehood, tied directly to the Piast dynasty's founding moment in 966 AD — a date the communist government was simultaneously trying to de-emphasize in favor of secular nationalist narratives over Catholic ones. The resulting tension between state and church over ownership of the millennium celebrations shaped which designs reached production and which were quietly suppressed.

This nickel trial strike, catalogued as Pr86, represents a rejected orientation — the "faces left" variant was not advanced to circulation. Pattern survivors of this type are known in very small quantities, almost certainly struck for internal approval purposes rather than distribution.
