Poland issued this coin during one of the most politically charged decades in its postwar history — the Solidarity movement had been crushed under martial law declared by General Jaruzelski in December 1981, and the Church remained the one institution capable of operating outside state control. John Paul II's visits to his homeland in 1979 and 1983 drew crowds in the millions and functioned as barely concealed acts of national resistance. The NBP's decision to issue commemorative silver in his honor was an awkward concession by a communist government to a pope who was actively undermining it.
