Obverse description The crowned Polish eagle displayed with wings spread occupies the central field, rendered in high relief in the socialist realist style. The circular legend POLSKA RZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA arcs along the upper periphery, with the denomination 100 ZŁ flanked by bullet stops appearing at the lower rim. The date 19 73 is divided to either side of the eagle's body, with the Warsaw Mint mark (MW) positioned below. The overall design reflects the standard Polish People's Republic state emblem coinage type of the period.

Reverse description A three-quarter facing portrait bust of Mikołaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus), the renowned Polish astronomer, dominates the central field in sculpted high relief, depicting him with shoulder-length wavy hair and period-appropriate attire. The legend MIKOŁAJ KOPERNIK arcs along the upper periphery, flanked by bullet stops. The birth and death years 1473 - 1543 appear in two lines along the lower arc of the field. The word PRÓBA (meaning 'trial' or 'pattern') is inscribed in the right field, identifying this piece as a trial strike, along with the engraver's initials SW. The portrait is modelled after a known Renaissance likeness of Copernicus and was engraved by Stanisława Wątróbska-Frindt.
