| Reverse description | A three-quarter facing portrait bust of Mikołaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus), the renowned Polish astronomer, dominates the central field in sculpted high relief, depicting him with shoulder-length wavy hair and period-appropriate attire. The legend MIKOŁAJ KOPERNIK arcs along the upper periphery, flanked by bullet stops. The birth and death years 1473 - 1543 appear in two lines along the lower arc of the field. The word PRÓBA (meaning 'trial' or 'pattern') is inscribed in the right field, identifying this piece as a trial strike, along with the engraver's initials SW. The portrait is modelled after a known Renaissance likeness of Copernicus and was engraved by Stanisława Wątróbska-Frindt. |
