Poland's 1973 Kopernik commemorative program was among the most elaborate in the People's Republic's coinage history, timed to the 500th anniversary of the astronomer's birth and produced across multiple compositions and formats simultaneously. The nickel trial strikes were part of an extensive series of essais and pattern pieces submitted for approval before the final cupronickel circulation issue was authorized — the program generated an unusually large number of documented variants, which is why Fischer, ParM, and KM all catalogue this piece under separate references despite it being the same fundamental striking.
The "big" designation distinguishes this from a smaller-diameter trial of the same design produced concurrently.
