Poland's 100 Złotych Kopernik series generated an unusual volume of trial material in the early 1970s because the coin's release was timed to the 500th anniversary of Copernicus's birth in 1973 — a politically significant event the People's Republic invested heavily in commemorating. Aluminium trial strikes like this one were part of a broader evaluation process at Mennica Polska, testing planchet specifications and die performance before committing to the final copper-nickel circulation issue.
