| Additional information |
Zamenhof, the Warsaw-born ophthalmologist who published the first Esperanto grammar in 1887, was commemorated here as part of Poland's extensive collectibles program of the late 1970s — a series the state mint used aggressively to generate hard currency from Western collectors during a period of acute foreign exchange pressure. This piece is a trial strike, meaning it was produced outside the normal production run to test dies, adjust composition, or satisfy mint archive requirements, and never entered general distribution.
The nickel composition distinguishes it from the standard issued version. Trial pieces from Mennica Państwowa in this era rarely left official channels.
