Zamenhof, the Warsaw ophthalmologist who invented Esperanto in 1887, was commemorated on this issue during a period when the Polish government found his internationalist ideals politically convenient — the universal language movement had genuine traction in socialist bloc cultural diplomacy. The coin appeared in the same year Poland was deepening its engagement with international Esperanto congresses, where the language retained an unusually strong following among Eastern European intellectuals.
