This note was never issued by Narodowy Bank Polski in any official capacity. It was produced by the Solidarity underground — Solidarność — as a propaganda piece during the period of martial law and its aftermath, when the movement operated as an illegal organization under General Jaruzelski's military government. The choice of Wałęsa's portrait as a direct substitute for the communist-approved figures on genuine NBP currency was a deliberate provocation.
Cataloged variously as a "fantasy" or "propaganda note," its legal status at the time of production was unambiguous: possession carried real risk.
