Helena Modrzejewska — known in American theatrical circles as Helena Modjeska — emigrated to California in 1876 and became one of the most celebrated Shakespearean actresses on the English-language stage, despite learning the language only after her arrival. Poland claimed her fiercely as a national figure even as she built her career abroad. This 1975 issue was part of the NBP's commemorative program operating under strict hard-currency constraints, and trial strikes of this type were produced in limited numbers for approval purposes, distinguishing them from the regular bullion-adjacent collector issues.
The .625 fineness is notably lower than the .750 silver used in some contemporary Polish commemoratives — a deliberate cost reduction reflecting the economic pressures of the mid-1970s People's Republic.
