Helena Modrzejewska — known in the United States as Helena Modjeska — left Poland in 1876 and became one of the most celebrated Shakespearean actresses on the American stage, performing to packed houses in New York, San Francisco, and London. The NBP issued this 100 Złotych type in 1975 to mark the centenary of her American debut. Trial strikes in nickel were produced as pattern pieces ahead of the silver circulation issue, allowing mint technicians and approving authorities to evaluate die quality and relief before committing to the final alloy.
